This two-day workshop, led by Grammy-nominated artists Layth Sidiq and Naseem Alatrash (Qawsaan), will delve into the unique dynamics of duo playing, a key feature of Qawsaan's innovative approach to Arabic music. Participants will explore the essential elements of Arabic music, such as Maqam (melodic frameworks) and Iqa’a (rhythmic cycles), while also learning how to craft arrangements for two instruments in both traditional and contemporary settings. The workshop focuses on communication, improvisation, and creating a harmonious musical dialogue, culminating in an informal presentation of the collaborative work developed during the sessions.

DAY 1

Lecture: History of Arabic Music and Traditional Instruments (11:00 am - 12:00 pm)
Led by Layth Sidiq

Layth will introduce participants to the history of Arabic traditional string instruments and the rich diversity of music in the Arab world. This session will cover the foundational elements of Arabic music, including Maqam, Iqa’a, and traditional musical forms. Participants will also explore how instruments such as the violin play distinct roles within various ensembles and how to approach playing Arabic music with a deeper understanding of its melodic and rhythmic structures.

Lecture: Preserving Tradition and fostering Innovation (12:30 pm - 1:30pm)
Led by Naseem Alatrash

Through an introduction to the Arabic cello, its history and evolving roles within Arabic and Middle Eastern music, Naseem will help explore the cross-genre application of traditional Arabic instruments and classical western instruments, highlighting their versatility in global jazz and contemporary compositions. This session will include a deep dive into Taqasim (Arabic improvisation) and using Maqam as a framework for modern composition.

Lunch Break (1:30 pm - 2:30 pm)

Workshop: Qawsaan: Arranging Arabic Music (2:30 pm - 4 pm)

In this interactive session, Layth and Naseem will come together to demonstrate how to arrange Arabic music using both traditional and contemporary techniques with the violin and cello. Participants will learn the process of putting together an arrangement and will have the opportunity to engage with the material, making this a participatory session. Bring your instruments and be ready to collaborate.

DAY 2

Lecture: Zero Gravity: Improvisation Beyond Comfort (11:00 am - 12:00 pm)

This concept, which Layth and Naseem developed during their time at the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, emphasizes improvisation beyond the comfort zone. Drawing on the art of Taqasim and their experiences in jazz, participants will learn how to "think compositionally" while improvising, enhancing their skills in call-and-response and active listening.Key themes:

Workshop: Applying Duo Techniques (12:00 - 1:30 pm)

Building on the improvisation concepts discussed in the "Zero Gravity" lecture, this session focuses on applying duo-playing techniques in real time. Layth and Naseem will guide participants in creating short arrangements for two instruments, emphasizing the skills of call-and-response, active listening, and compositional thinking. Participants will work in pairs to explore musical dialogue and interplay, enhancing their improvisational confidence and adaptability.

Lunch Break (1:30 pm - 2:30 pm)

Workshop: Preparing for the Final Presentation (2:30 pm - 4:00 pm)

In this session, Layth and Naseem will assist participants in crafting pieces for the final presentation. The repertoire will incorporate the improvisation techniques and duo-playing skills explored throughout the day. Whether working in duos, trios, or full ensembles, participants will have the opportunity to refine their arrangements, collaborate, and prepare for a final showcase that demonstrates their newfound skills in both structured and improvised musical settings.

Informal musical performance: Wrap-up and Takeaways: (4:00 pm - 5:00 pm)
The workshop will conclude with an informal presentation where participants will showcase the material they have learned and developed. This final session offers a platform to demonstrate the collaborative work, highlighting the unique dynamics of duo playing and the application of Arabic music concepts in a contemporary context.
