Life's rhythm ebbs and flows as we transition through different phases. Explore the ways in which music therapists utilize music through their clinical practice to support individuals and families as they experience major life transitions. Participants will engage in learning about evidence-based and culturally centered uses of music to support folks from birth through the end of life, while engaging in hands-on therapeutic musical experiences to further their understanding and knowledge of how music therapists may offer support.

Target Audience: Musicians, educators, birth and end of life doulas, and healthcare providers looking to develop beginning knowledge and skills in research, program development, and community engagement

Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of this masterclass, participants will be able to:

1. Understand the scientific and cultural underpinnings for the use of music-based experiences to impact health outcomes.
2. Critically examine the boundaries and differences between various types of therapeutic music experiences.
3. Demonstrate foundational skills in therapeutic music experiences that can support birth and end of life health outcomes for individuals and families.
4. Develop strategies to engage folks in music making to support autonomy, self-expression and empowerment.
5. Articulate the value of multi-disciplinary collaboration for music-based health promotion

Bio:

Kristal is an American music therapist who graduated from Berklee in 2012. She has worked as a board certified music therapist in the U.S.A., and the GCC, supporting families through major life transitions. Kristal’s work has focused extensively in pediatric palliative and hospice care, supporting through medical, grief and bereavement journeys. She has had the honor of presenting at multiple international conferences regarding her work as a music therapist and has recently published her first chapter in a textbook where she explores cultural considerations working with South West Asian folks in hospice care. As a musician and therapist, Kristal has also experienced the therapeutic benefits of music and hopes to continue advocating for its use in a variety of healthcare settings throughout the U.A.E.
